Preservation Planning

As libraries update their preservation programs to adjust to today’s rich hybrid collections environment, there is an opportunity to tie preservation more closely to a wide range of library operations and expertise.  21st century preservation programs will require new levels of collaboration, flexibility, risk management, and integrative thinking, and I relish the idea of assisting colleagues nationally in updating and adjusting their approaches to this noble mission.   This will include strategic planning and organizational development, leadership development, and working with library and college/university constituents to devise thoughtful, realistic collection management plans.  The research and planning consultancy I did for the University of Minnesota to guide the development of a preservation plan for the University Libraries (https://netfiles.umn.edu/ul/LibrariesWide/Preservation/Final%20Document%20FEB%208%2C%202010/Enduring%20Access%20to%20U%20of%20M%20Libraries%20Collections.pdf), provides a sense of my collection management-based approach to preservation program planning.
